Field Notes · Revenue Building

The playbooks, in the open.

Rankings are vanity. Revenue is sanity. This shelf is where the second half of that sentence gets practical — the unglamorous machinery that turns a ranking into a booked job and a bank deposit.

What lives here

Almost none of it looks like SEO. All of it decides whether SEO paid.

Call tracking that actually counts the phone. Review rituals that compound quarter after quarter. Pricing pages that close instead of hide. Intake speed measured in minutes, because that’s how buyers measure it. The arithmetic of renting leads versus earning them. None of this is what people picture when they say “SEO” — and it’s where most of the money I find in audits has been hiding.

Revenue Building
Revenue BuildingThe shelf’s banner says it plainly: measurement, pages, reviews, pricing — the work that turns rankings into money.

The posts here are written to be handed to somebody. A tech, an office manager, a web person — most pieces end with a thing you can assign on Monday morning and check by Friday. If you own the business rather than run its marketing, this is the shelf to read first.

The organizing idea

Revenue is a chain, and Google only forges the first link.

Every post on this shelf is about strengthening one link in the same chain. Being findable is where SEO vendors stop talking, because it’s the part they sell. But a chain doesn’t care which link snaps — a perfect ranking feeding an unanswered phone produces exactly as much revenue as no ranking at all, at considerably greater expense.

The revenue chain
The revenue chainSix links between a search and a deposit. The teardowns on this site are, almost without exception, stories of link four.

If you want to see the chain snapping in the wild, the law firm that answered in nineteen hours is link four failing; the practice with the broken booking widget is link five; the HVAC company counting a third of its calls is link six. Three businesses, three snapped links, zero ranking problems.
